Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was not the enemy of Napoleon.
He was adopted by the king of Sweden to secure the dynasty.
Napoleon was engaged to Desiree and cheated on her with Josephine. She wanted to end her life in the Seine when she found out, but Bernadotte saved her. This is the reason why she later married him.
Dont falsify history with wrong headlines!

Wonderful movie. Saw it when I was a young schoolgirl, only remembered a few scenes, and was too young to understand the story entirely, but never forgot it . Todays viewing brought everything into focus, and I now understand it much, much better. What a fabulous movie that takes you on a journey to experience the ambitions of Napoleon. This reveals a very humane side to him, one in which he allows himself to be just himself whenever he meets the innocent, charming, and utterly frank Desiree, who exposes him for what he really is. I loved all the characters, and he was my favorite actor when I was in school.

As movies go, this makes history much simpler and the men involved much more honourable than reality. Swedish history is full of intrigue, wars and liasons with most notably German, French and Russian interests. One of the men around king Gustav III (ruler 1771-1792) tried to save the French royal familiy, or at least Marie Antoinette, but he was caught. There were several soft coup detats over the years. One of the more important ones which still has an impact today, was the changes made by the same Gustav at the inception of his reign. A quite modern constitution, most certainly influenced by the times. The Swedish noble class didnt like him, though. They had lost power and eventually staged their own coup in 1792, killing the king. His brother Karl acted as regent until the only son of Gustav III, Gustav IV Adolf, became king. But the new king was rumoured to be the offspring of one of his fathers men. The nobles were mainly francophile, while the king G IV A was friendly toward the Germans. They finally got rid of him after the terrible war with Russia, by dethroning him, instating his uncle Karl XIII who is mentioned in the movie to have asked Bernadotte to become heir to the Swedish throne. We simply didnt have anyone left at home that people with power could unilaterally support. (Fun fact: I just noticed that one of the most prominent planners of the coup by Gustav III was a forefather to one of my best friends in my teens. I remember her telling me how she was ashamed of reading about her relatives in history class in school.)
