Yesterday, in the third round of the U.S. Open women's singles, 30-year-old Wang Yafan from Nanjing defeated 35-year-old Belarusian tennis star Victoria Azarenka, who is 1.83 meters tall, with a score of 2-1, advancing to the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam for the first time. At the age of 30, reaching a new height is a sacred and precious gift bestowed upon her by God.
Earlier this year at the Australian Open, Wang Yafan lost the first nine games in the first round but then made a stunning comeback to defeat the Romanian beauty Sorana Cîrstea. In the second round, she beat the highly-watched, half-Chinese player Emma Raducanu, before narrowly losing in the third round to Zheng Qinwen, who eventually became the runner-up.
In the first round of this U.S. Open women's singles, Wang was fortunate when her Greek opponent Maria Sakkari retired after losing the first set 2-6 due to injury. In the second round, Wang easily defeated France's Diane Parry. Along with Zheng Qinwen from Hubei and Wang Xiyu from Shenzhen, she advanced to the women's singles Round of 32, giving Chinese fans a big surprise and echoing her earlier achievement at the Australian Open.
In the third round, Wang faced a tough opponent, the 20th seed Victoria Azarenka from Belarus. Earlier this year at the Washington D.C. event, Wang had lost to Azarenka in three sets. However, yesterday, Wang finally defeated Azarenka 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, advancing to the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam for the first time.
At 30 years old, Wang Yafan has become the oldest Chinese female tennis player in history to reach the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam. Zheng Qinwen reached the Round of 16 at 19, Zheng Jie at 20, Wang Xiyu at 21, Li Na at 24, Peng Shuai at 25, Zhang Shuai and Wang Qiang at 27, and Zhu Lin at 28. Now, at 30, Wang Yafan has finally fought her way to the Round of 16 after competing in 17 Grand Slam tournaments.
In the next round, Wang Yafan will compete with Spain's 26th seed Paula Badosa for a spot in the quarterfinals. We wish this late bloomer continued success in her tennis career, reaching even greater heights!
