This thread brings back memories of sitting around a table at a meal in nyc I couldn't possibly afford while everyone offered up what ivy league they'd attended. I was so embarrassed I said Red Brick.

classism is so engrained in the culture at “elite” schools.

Always upset me when companies would say, “oh, we are only hiring from these 10 schools”. And then, there was me! Who was outperforming but...did not go to any of those schools! My colleagues and I used to joke that we had “came, thru the kitchen door, not the front door”.
Of my friends and acquaintances, I’m aware only of those who graduated from Harvard because they won’t ever shut up about how they graduated from Harvard. Ask them if they want to compare SAT scores, too. Dorks.

My sister earned a double major at CAL. She had an interview with Harvard, but said the interviewer was a condescending, sexist who couldn’t believe that a LatinX from Oakland would attempt to attend Harvard.

Shhhh. Keep our secret. This will blow your mind: in the Midwest, state schools ARE prestigious institutes that provide education of the highest caliber. Don’t tell the coastal ‘elites.’ We don’t want their kind around here.

I’m not from the Midwest, I’m only two hours from NYC but I have always found NY media to be extremely elitist geographically. They think of anyone outside the five boroughs as dumb rubes when in fact we represent more of the typical American experience than they do.

If you want a degree in architecture in NJ and can't afford to pay of state tuition it's either NJIT or Princeton. That's it. The state school is an easy choice in terms of affordability and access. It's not always a real choice.

This is also about how people on the coasts look down at the Midwest—and the media & entertainment industries often ignore it. I’m so sick of reading stories set in NYC, for example.

And LA!.. The Good Wife was interestingly set in Chicago, which added a lot of unique qualities to the setting you don’t typically see (dive bar culture, corrupt state political bodies, etc). Atlanta, Donald Glover’s show, showed things on TV I rarely ever saw on a show.

So many in USA don't understand that there are many ways to see life and any of those ways are dependent on the culture of the geography where you live.

Thank you from this first gen college grad! Community college then SFSU. I used to work alongside a guy who went to MIT and Stanford. Many gushed over his degrees. I just said "yeah but I make the same $ as him and I went to state! I'm the success story here!".
