Her seclusion 隐居/i/was not the result of a failed love affair, but rather a part of a more general pattern of renunciation 放弃、断绝、 through which she, in her quest for self-sovereignty自主权, carried on an argument with the Puritan /jue-i/ 清教徒 fathers, attacking with wit才智、风趣 and irony 冷嘲热讽 their cheerless寡欢的 Calvinist 加尔文doctrine, their stern patriarchal 【、peitri'a:k l】God, and their rigid 呆板的 notions of "true  womanhood“.
