Introduced in the 1910s, this was the primary way children in mainland China learned to read until the 1950s. It is still the standard system used in Taiwan today“。

When you ask for the "old" Zhuyin Fuhao (注音符號), you are likely referring to the original 1913/1918 set which included characters that are now obsolete in standard Mandarin, or the extended symbols used for other Chinese dialects like Taiwanese Hokkien.

The original system was called Guoyin Zimu (國音字母 - "National Phonetic Alphabet"). Here are the "old" and extended symbols you won't find on a standard Mandarin keyboard today:

1. The Obsolete "Old National" Symbols

In 1913, Mandarin was standardized based on the "Old National Pronunciation," which included certain sounds that were later dropped in 1932. These three symbols are the most famous "obsolete" ones:

  • 万 (v / va): Used for the "v" sound (like in "voice"). Mandarin later merged this sound into (w).

  • 兀 (ng): Represented the "ng" sound at the beginning of a word (e.g., the surname "Ng").

  • 广 (gn / ny): Represented a palatal nasal sound (like the "ñ" in Spanish niño).

Quick Fact: Where do they come from?

Each symbol is a simplified part of an ancient Chinese character that has a similar sound. For example:

comes from (bāo).

comes from (the radical for "cover").

comes from (yā - "fork").

2. The Full "Bopomofo" Set (Modern Standards)

The standard set used in Taiwan today consists of 37 symbols. If you are looking for the complete list as it stands now, they are categorized as follows:

Initials (Consonants):

ㄅ (b), ㄆ (p), ㄇ (m), ㄈ (f), ㄉ (d), ㄊ (t), ㄋ (n), ㄌ (l), ㄍ (g), ㄎ (k), ㄏ (h), ㄐ (j), ㄑ (q), ㄒ (x), ㄓ (zh), ㄔ (ch), ㄕ (sh), ㄖ (r), ㄗ (z), ㄘ (c), ㄙ (s)

Medials & Finals (Vowels):

ㄚ (a), ㄛ (o), ㄜ (e), ㄝ (ê), ㄞ (ai), ㄟ (ei), ㄠ (ao), ㄡ (ou), ㄢ (an), ㄣ (en), ㄤ (ang), ㄥ (eng), ㄦ (er)

ㄧ (i/y), ㄨ (u/w), ㄩ (ü)

3. Extended Zhuyin (Taiwanese & Hakka)

To record local dialects, linguists created "Extended Zhuyin." These look like variations of the standard symbols but represent different sounds:

Symbol Sound Used in...
? Voiced 'b' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Voiced 'z' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Voiced 'j' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Voiced 'g' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Nasal 'enn' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Nasal 'inn' Taiwanese Hokkien
? Nasal 'unn' Taiwanese Hokkien

4. Special "Old" Vowel: ? (ih)

In very old textbooks, you might see ?. This was used to represent the "empty vowel" sound in syllables like shi (ㄕ) or zi (ㄗ). In modern Zhuyin, we simply write the initial (ㄓ, ㄔ, ㄕ, ㄖ, ㄗ, ㄘ, ㄙ) by itself, and the vowel is "implied."
