Another great book by Peter Hesseler on the various aspects of Chinese society during the past decade: the tales followed his driving routes from the Great Wall ruins to the villages, from the factory bosses to the factory workers; from the party members to the migrants, from the commercial artists to the school children, from history to present, from corruption to ethics, from his active participation to his removed reflection--it is well written and planned with the support of New Yorker and National Geographic. The greatness lies in the details and in Hesseler’s unique writing style that is discreet, poignant and hilarious at times.
