Beijing - the perfect site for the 2012 Games

As ministers argue whether to cut housing or hospitals, we can no longer afford to throw money at the Olympics

Why can't we have this in Beijing? All the expensive stadiums are already there and the Games have been moved before: in 1906 the decision was taken to move the 1908 Olympics from Rome to London after Mount Vesuvius erupted and the Italians needed the money to rebuild Naples.


泰晤士报今天发表署名文章说，最近2012年变得不那么诱人了。2012年英国本该沉浸于国际奥运会的荣耀与喜悦，但这也将是英国面临巨额债务，艰困的一年。在2012年，国家债务预计将达到1万亿英镑。与此同时，还要将数以十亿计的英镑投入举办奥运会。

奥运会预算已由原来的27亿英镑，大幅飙升到93亿英镑，而且还会继续上涨。本月，负责奥运会的一位大臣甚至连类似“早知如此，何必当初”的话都冒出来了，“要是我们当时知道现在的情形，我们还会申办奥运吗？几乎可以肯定不会。”这位大臣还将投资奥运形容为“反（经济）周期的投资”。

　　文章接着道，为什么不在北京举办2012年奥运会呢？北京是下届奥运会最合适不过的举办地，所有投资不菲的运动场所已经建好，况且奥运会过去就曾更换过举办地点。例如，1906年，国际奥委会决定将1908年的奥运会举办地点由罗马改到伦敦，理由是维苏威火山爆发，意大利政府需要资金重建灾区。时下，全球金融危机爆发，英国需要资金重建经济，而非修建一些用过即弃的运动场馆。
