特别喜欢听Sting的这首歌，这也是我听的第一首Sting的歌， 当时听的时候只觉得好听上口，而对歌词部分没太在意，事隔多年以后再来听，感受颇深，我们在海外的游子，每日生活游走在一个和自己文化， 礼仪很不同的国度和世界，有远离祖国亲人的寂寞，有酸甜苦辣的难言，但是也有悠然自得，做人做自己，看世界，看风景的乐趣, 就是同样说英语的英国人到纽约了，也会有这样那样的困惑， 更何况我们这些怀抱着祖宗留下的方块字走四方的炎黄子孙呢， 这首歌最让我感动的就是在歌中反复唱的那句《Be yourself, no matter what they say！做好自己，别管别人怎么说！》， 这与我们中国人的祖训《以不变应万变》也有相同之处。

Sting写这首歌的灵感，是来自一位英国作家Quentin Crisp， 是Sting 在Quentin Crisp刚从伦敦搬到纽约Bowery 一所公寓不久创作的，据说作家跟Sting开了一个很有名的玩笑《"...that he looked forward to receiving his naturalization papers so that he could commit a crime and not be deported."》， Sting 就《回敬》了他这首歌。

《這首歌Sting其實不是寫給自己的，故事的主角是一位英國Quentin Crisp (MV裡一直出現的這位"女士")。雖然Quentin偶爾也會出現在一些電影裡客串演出，但是讓他聲名大噪的還是他擅長的"智慧嘲諷"。1981年Quentin如願移民紐約，也將他在祖國英國最具代表的作品The Naked Civil Servant (自傳以及one man show) 帶到這個"大蘋果"裡巡迴演出。1985年因為拍攝電影而結識Sting，也才會有這首經典歌的誕生。

而Sting歌中的New York其實就是我們存在的每一個社會。生活在一個自己與眾不同的環境中，當你面臨別人不平等的對待時，唯有"be a gentleman"才是最踏實的生存之道。這也是"It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile (微笑面對別人的無知才是真正的男人)"的最終使命。所以...Be yourself, no matter what they say！》

Quentin Crisp (25 December 1908(1908-12-25) – 21 November 1999), born Denis Charles Pratt, was an English writer and raconteur. He became a gay icon in the 1970s after publication of his memoir, The Naked Civil Servant, brought to the attention of the general public his defiant exhibitionism and longstanding refusal to remain in the closet.
