Selena 在整个拉丁乐坛获得广泛的认可，她的音乐跨跃了文化的界限，深受青年和老年人的喜爱。她同时也是一位性感舞台表演者，常被称为拉丁的“麦当娜”。Selena除了她的歌唱事业以外还经常参加一些反毒品和宣传人们对爱滋病的认识等活动。 1971年4月16日出生于美国得克萨斯州的墨西哥裔歌手Selena , 她的父亲是一位墨西哥籍美国人，在Selena出生之前他就已经是Los Dinos乐队的一名成员。在Selena十岁时，父亲成为她的第一个经纪人，1983年Los Dinos乐队为她录制了第一首歌曲。
在其短暂的24年生命中，留下了无数令人难以忘怀的音乐。虽然出生在英语国家，但是Selena 绝大部分歌曲都为拉丁风格，并且用墨西哥式西班牙语进行演唱的。Selena 曾经为拉丁歌曲创造了无数辉煌和奇迹。90年代初是Selena 最为巅峰的时期。
80年代，Selena嫁给了Los Dinos乐队的吉他手Chris Perez，这个乐队的另外两位成员是Selena的兄妹，为她录制了许多歌曲。1987年Selena获得本年度最佳女歌手奖和最佳表演奖。在1990年她和ENI公司签定了合约，与Los Dinos乐队合作发行了最新专辑。在1993年Selena和乐队获得了葛莱美最佳表演奖，同年发行了另一张爱情歌曲辑，同时开设了一家时装公司。1994年，Selena出演了第一部电影《Don Juan Demarco》，在影片中饰演一位女歌手。年末发行了专辑《Amor Prohibido》，这张专辑获得了葛莱美金奖。 1995，Selena开始准备录制她的英语专辑，想在美国主流音乐上有所突破。
1995年，她发现她最可以信赖的朋友之一，她的歌迷会主席 Yolanda Saldivar 在她的时装公司( Selena etc.boutique )和歌迷会的资金项目中有贪污的行为。3月31日，Selena 在一家 Motel 里向 Yolanda Saldivar 就一些做了很久但是仍然有很多疑问的账目进行询问，并且最后争论起来 。随后，Yolanda Saldivar 向 Selena 开了枪……但她没有立即死亡，跑出大厅喊道“Yolanda Saldivar是杀人犯”。一个小时后Selena死在医院中。Yolanda Saldivar被判入狱30年。
