这篇分享主要写给象我这样no phd， no paper，not very high scores, aim at
community hospital 的old CMG 普罗大众作为参考，希望对以后参加Match 的XDJM 有
所帮助。

去年2月刚考完CK，打电话到家附近的一所community hospital 的 Volunteer
Department. 那老太太也实话实说：All our observers are brought by the
attendings. We need research assistants and interpreter…当时就想，反正先去
看看再说。于是被安排到中国人社区附近的一个卫星诊所。

Research programs 非常简单，就是收集数据。多数时间在做翻译。现在回头来看，做
翻译其实收获挺大。首先是逼着自己提高英文水平。由于是跟着主治医看病人，其实就
是在Observe，学习communication skills的最直接方式。有时见到有特殊体征，他会
让我做体查。病人离开之后，他会告诉我要做哪些鉴别诊断，该如何处理。时间长了，
他就让我量血压，写病程录，甚至写处方他签名。有空聊天，他会告诉我他知道的
Program and PD的情况，如何survive residency…Clinic的 medical director每周有
一个上午到医院做教学查房，他也叫我跟去听。当然了，杂活还是要做的，例如给clerk,
nurse翻译，帮中国病人填表。。。

到7月请求medical director给我出推荐信他很爽快地答应了。10月底这个Program的
Chair 直接约见interview, 寒喧两句，一个问题也没问就说 We know you pretty well,
so I’ve kept a position for you…prematch 在10分钟之内敲定，简单得我不敢相信。
不过contract到2月下旬才签，所以后来出了点小波折。。。这是题外话了.

中途4，5月时出于学习的目的，我又申请到另外一家教学医院做Observership. 开始联
系时也说Put me in the waiting list. 后来我登门去，说我可以同时当翻译，他们可
喜欢了，因为医院就在中国人社区附近，他们正在开拓唐人市场呢，于是说我随时可以
去，做的时间越久越好。这次是到病房，跟一个resident team. Floor attending 比
较nice, 后来也给我出了推荐信。

我感觉observeship一来是熟悉US clinical system，更重要的是build up connection.

下面是我了解到的NY地区一些community hospital的情况，未必很准确，仅供各位参考。

Maimonides, Brookly.
Most patients are Jewish. Some Chinese and other immigrants. Nice area in
Brooklyn.
IM: very good program with a lot of in house fellowship. But they like young
graduates. More than half of the residents are Indian.
Ped: Not as competitive as IM. Some old CMGs found positions.
Ob/gyn: extremely busy with 6000 deliveries a year. 4 positions a year. Will
consider old IMGs if you have Ob experience before.

Lutheran, Brookyn.
Area OK. “联合国医院”，病人有欧洲人，西语裔，华裔，中东人，少量黑人。
Housing is not offered.
IM：22positions, 20 prematch. They prefer less than 5 years. PD are nice,
often has lunch together with the residents. No in house fellowship. The 2
positions for match are never matched. If you think you are at high risk of
scramble, I will suggest you send your CV to the PC now, by mail not by e-
amil.
PM: very CMG friendly because they have some excellent CMG residents before.
Most of the residents are Asian but just a few Indians. They don’t care
graduation year. Teaching so so.
Ob/gyn: extremely stressful with 5000 deliveries a year. 3 positions a year
. PD is obsessive about <5 years.

Flushing hospital, Queens.
Located near Chinese community. They prefer < 5 years but will consider
those who have appropriate experience. Ob has 3 positions with about 2200
deliveries per year. Good teaching.

Kingsbrook Jewish, Brooklyn.
位于黑人区。City hospital. High salary but very busy. Teaching so so. IM
program interviews a lot of candidates. They ask medical questions at
interview. No in house fellowship.

St Vincent, Manhattan. This is a university hospital.
Good location. They offer housing but quite expensive, 1300/month for a
studio.
IM: Prefer < 5 years.
Ob: PD is very nice. Not very busy. They will consider old CMG with ob
experience.

就这么多啦。希望各位也能将了解的医院概况说一说，为后来者提供信息。但愿若干年
后CMG 有能力跟老印抢地盘。祝参加MATCH的朋友们好运心想事成！

我们学医的当翻译，肯定比其他人更facilitate医生与病人之间的交流，所以
attending 是很喜欢的。看见他在看病人之间有空闲时间就问些问题，病例讨论，或者
关于住院医申请，他都比较乐意解答。

记得有一次医院那边质检部门的人过来开会，说这个诊所的糖尿病人随访不够到位。
Medical director 怀疑是统计不够全。恰好我们的research program 也在收集这个数
据，他就叫我和另外一个volunteer争取用三天时间核对一下。由于有些需要pull out
the patients’ charts, 所以一次不能拿太多，否则会影响临床工作。我们就自己动
手找病历，趁director有空就叫他过目，再自己把病历放回去，不用麻烦clerk.如此几
次循环，一天时间就完成任务。证明是质检部门统计不够全。他很高兴，下班时说I
appreciate your good job!

有一段时间比较空闲，Medical director 安排我把报告单一一放到病历本中去。这可
是苦差，眼力加体力劳动。所以报告单已经堆积如山。干了几天后我向他提出，工作时
间挪到下午及晚上，因为那时病人没那么多，clerk人数少，取放病历效率高些。帮他
们清了不少。我呢趁机减了几磅 .皆大欢喜。

I believe, our dedication will be rewarded some day.


I applied for Match 2007, but very late in November 2006. I took CK in Feb
2007, so nobaby invited me for interview. Then I had enough time for OB and
preparing for Match 2008. This program\\\\\\\'s chair interviewed me in Oct 2007.
Actually I stayed in that clinic for about 2 months. later I switched to
another hospital to do OB. Then I got a full time job from June 07. We have
to earn some money...

I wish you guys don\\\\\\\'t have to waste time like me.

BTW, for those who are preparing for scramble, NEVER pay money to the
companies for e-mails and fax. Useless! Many programs set up software to
block these junk e-mails. If not, the PC will delete this e-mails directly.
And do you think the PC is patient enough to keep loading paper into the fax
machine?? 这是我07年3月的血泪教训啊!

谢谢大家的支持，我只是希望能起到个抛砖引语的作用。我的目的就是希望大家今年申
请的时候，不再向我开始的时候那样走了很多弯路。相信很多朋友都有不错的IV offer
，如果有时间和大家也能分享一下的，肯定会对今后的IV有很大的帮助。BTW,我现在是
在central time zone,过几个月就move到east time zone了。区长就不敢当了，这里的
牛人太多了。


Howard University Hospital:

有时候发音不准让人以为是Harvard,Just kidding!
这个大学是在美国非常出名的Black University.所以这个医院的患者90%都是黑人患者
，他们的faculty好像绝大部分都是黑人。这个医院有不少fellowship，另外还可以去
NIH做短期的research.据说医院周围的治安不是很好。他们的住院医70%都是IMG，很多
来自非洲，估计connection很重要。offer prematch.

IV的时候只有一个faculty，面试我的faculty好像来自非洲，口音很重，还好我没让他
重复问题。问题都是最常见的，tell me about yourself, strength, your goal,
your challenge...感觉还是很轻松的。

最后一句话这是个absolutely IMG friendly program.
