美国奇闻：贼喊捉贼枪击屋主

 

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI — An intruder broke into a Clinton Township home during the day Monday, stole a gun and fired shots at the homeowner who surprised the intruder when he came home for lunch. The intruder was still on the property when police arrived and took him into custody.

“I've lived here for the past year and a half,” John Broderick told The Macomb Daily. “I thought it was the best place to be, the safest area around here. I never dreamed I would encounter something like this.”

When Clinton Township police officers arrived, they found the suspect in the back yard, according to Detective Capt. Richard Maierle. The suspect refused to cooperate with the officers, who then deployed a Taser to subdue him then took him into custody.

When Broderick pulled up to the house on Heydenreich near Hall Road about 12:30, he noticed the passenger door was open on the Grand Am that he was advertising for sale on his front lawn. Broderick walked into the house and saw the intruder standing in the kitchen, clad in pajamas and slippers, holding a pair of Broderick's sunglasses.

“I'm like ‘What's going on,’ and he didn't say anything for a minute. Then he said ‘I'm not stealing these’ referring to the sunglasses.  Then I looked down and he was wearing my slippers. That's when I went for my pistol in the bedroom,” Broderick said. “But it was gone.”

The intruder apparently had already gone through the house and discovered the weapon and a firearm magazine hidden under a mattress. As Broderick emerged from the bedroom, the stranger was pointing the gun at him.

“He didn't say anything,” Broderick said. "I thought, 'Oh boy. I just turned around and I ran like hell out of there, and when I got outside, I heard popping sounds as he's shooting at me."I got about halfway across the lawn, and the next thing I know, 'Pow! Pow! Pow!'  I'm like ‘Holy moly.’ He probably shot eight times.” Broderick, who was not hit, ran next door to his neighbor's house to call police.

He never sensed the intruder was mentally unstable until he realized the man had even let out Broderick's dogs -- a bichon frise and a bichon poodle -- out of their cages to relieve themselves outside. The suspect allegedly told police he was the homeowner and Broderick was the intruder.

"My first thought was, 'Oh my God, did he get hurt"? Pam Broderick, Bob's wife, said.Pam said the police were there when she called for the couple's daily lunch chat."I was so scared," she said. "I pull up and there's 30 cop cars. The ambulance is here, and I couldn't find him, and I'm like, 'Oh no.' I don't know what I'd do without him."

“In my 36 years of being a police officer, I cannot recall ever having shots fired during a home invasion,” Maierle said. “But the important thing is nobody was hurt. Everyone is absolutely safe.”

The suspect is being held at the police lockup pending an arraignment Tuesday on charges of home invasion and assault with intent to commit murder. Maierle said he anticipates the defense lawyer will ask the magistrate to order the suspect to undergo a psychiatric exam.
