NEW YORK (Reuters) - Christopher Hitchens\'s book God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything and Tim Weiner\'s Legacy of Ashes: The history of the CIA are among 20 finalists announced on Wednesday for the National Book Awards.

The National Book Foundation chose five finalists for each of the four categories -- fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people\'s literature. The winners, who will receive $10,000, will be announced on November 14 in New York City.
For the first time in years, the nonfiction category does not include books specifically about 9/11, Islam, and the Middle East, the foundation said in a statement.
Instead this category features powerful books examining the origins of the Constitution, the history of the CIA, religion in public life, a biography and a memoir, it said.
Along with Hitchens and Weiner, the other nonfiction finalists are Edwidge Danticat for Brother, I\'m Dying, Woody Holton for Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution and Arnold Rampersad for Ralph Ellison: A Biography.
Competing in the fiction category are debut authors Mischa Berlinski for Fieldwork and Joshua Ferris for Then We Came to the End. They are up against Lydia Davis for Varieties of Disturbance, Denis Johnson for Tree of Smoke and Jim Shephard for Like You\'d Understand.
The dazzling range in style and subject matter represented by this year\'s selections is a powerful testament to the vibrancy of contemporary American literature, said Harold Augenbraum, executive director of the foundation.

To be eligible, a book must have been published between December 1, 2006, and November 30, 2007, and written by a U.S. citizen. Past winners include critically acclaimed names in American literature such as John Updike, Philip Roth and Ralph Ellison.
