2004-05-07 10:17:05 "are these differences we feel in thinking and writing process cause by linguistic elements only? or it has something to do with many other things like YingYun pointed out." "in writing, one has a voice that has something to do with both vocabulary and one's style, passion, sentiment, etc.. ---- sheng yin, in Chinese." This is a big topic, I only can offer what I am thinking at this moment. In my opinion, the individual voice changed when using different languiges first caused by the degree of his/her mastery of the languige. If you are the beginner of English, "hello, how are you, thanks" not make too much sence to change one's voice. If I said to 影云: "丫头又没法忍 了?", what I can say in English? Probabaly: " O, you like it, don't you!". Do you think this is the change of voice? However, the cultural elements could come to play now. If someone go dinner with the family, he say "thank you" to his mon when she pass a fork to him, it should be very normal in USA, but China, this is change of voice to my understanding. linguistic elements plays an important role too. Take your new work and 影云's translation for example: Tonight 今夜 when the evening bell echoes 晚鐘迴旋 my heart does not want 我的心不再 to run away. 逃亡 first two lines are prety good(specially the second one, 非常传神)。But the last one I feel somehow change voice of originals. Too much junks already. Just some of my notes.

To me, mastery of the language, culture and logistics are basic elements of individual voice. The identity is a more advanced product, it requires knowledge (basic 3s) and skills (the ability to re-create the language). Not every body has his/her voice however, only those who are good at knowledge and basics can do.

I may be able to create some sort of individual voice in Chinese, but definitely not in English due to my extremely poor basics!

!!!!
