By The Sea                                          Word by: Phil Griggs

Now Esther’s retiring. She is leaving the Pru
Poor Jim is in panic. There is so much to do
Her peers are all jealous. It’s such a great blow
As soon as it warms up, we know where she’ll go
By the Sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea
Ralph and she, Ralph and she, oh! How happy they’ll be.
When we work on the eighteenth floor
She’ll be at the shore and she won’t take calls from anybody.
No more commuting to Newark at all
Checks come in every month and she is having a ball
Esther loves to be beside Ralph’s side,
beside the sea, beside the seaside, by the beautiful sea.
While we’re pricing and slicing the data galore
She will read in the sun. What else you could want more?
Esther loves to be beside Ralph’s side
beside the sea, beside the seaside… Avery is calling!
She is off to a quilting bee
By the seaside, by the beautiful sea!
Esther’s glee to thee!

Note: Esther Milnes, the chief actuary of the Prudential Individual Life Company, retired after 32 years of service with company. Her husband Ralph used to be her co-worker, stayed  home and took care of their only son since Esther escalated her career much faster than him. Last year, Ralph was diagnosed with prostate cancer that paved to Esther’s decision to retire at age 55.  Jim Avery is her boss, the president of the company. The retirement party took place at the lobby of the  Washington Building in Newark. It was loaded with tears and laugh. Again, I played a sidekick role to organize this performance. It was fun!
