Rick put Hayes on in-active list, although he knows Yao usually performs better with Hayes on his side to crush the board and taking up defensive assignment. Why? Because you have to score against GS, no matter how tough you are defensively. That's why even Lanry got some minutes. Look at the first quarter, how Yao and Scola attacked the paint.
The notion that he was stupid in 4th quarter is just laughable how ignorant some of our fans are. As for 4th quarter, Yao desperately needed a breath. How do you defeat 2-3 zone? Zone-buster: 3 point shooting. That's why Novak was on, although he was a huge defensive liability, with his dead eye, Rockets don't mind a few minutes trading basketball. Without Yao on the quart, till almost 6 minute mark, they were able to hanging on the 10 points lead. Don Nelson adjusted and GS started to defend Novak tight, and Novak's inexperience exposed and got over-excited and started to force the issue. RA reacted again, sent in Scola. Without those 6 minutes, let's say RA sent in Lanry and Scola, watching the lead disappeared fast, and put Yao back in at the 9 minute mark. Does anyone of you still seriously think that Yao could make those clutch FTs and those 2 field goals? How many times have we seen in the past, that fatigue caused missed jumpers and FTs for Yao in late 4th quarter again and again? See how fresh was Yao on the end, how clutch was he on the end? That 3 mintues of extra rest could do wonders. A dead eye 3 pointer shooter will punish zone defense collapsing on Yao.
RA clearly had the right game plan and adjusted beautifully, and he outcoached Don Nelson last night. Yao averaged 13 points in previous 2 games against GS. RA was stupid? Geez, show some respect. He doesn't prepare as JVG does, but his flexibility in coaching and game adjustment is one of the top in the league, for years. It's embarrassing for casual fans to jump on reputed professional NBA coaches with such ignorant bonehead claims.
