Long before Lin-sanity consumed the month of February, President Barack Obama says he had secret intelligence on New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin.

“I knew about Jeremy before you did, or everybody else did,” Obama told ESPN’s Bill Simmons in a podcast on Grantland.com. The report on Lin came not from CIA or the NSA, but from Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. Like Lin, Duncan played hoops at Harvard.

“And so way back when, Arne and I were playing and he said, ‘I'm telling you, we've got this terrific guard named Jeremy Lin at Harvard,’ ” Obama said. “And then one of my best friends — his son is a freshman at Harvard — and so when he went for a recruiting trip he saw Lin in action.

“So I've been on the Jeremy Lin bandwagon for a while.”

Simmons chided Obama for taking credit “a little bit,” but the president replied: “I can't take credit for it, but I'm just saying I was there early.”

Jeremy Lin wrapped up the month he now owns with a 19-point, 13-assist performance in the Knicks’ 120-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavs on Wednesday night.

What will March bring? The president isn’t saying.
