写在前面的几句话：
不经意之间，发现这样写帖很容易，随便取一二小景，讲些许故事，反映美国生活的一方面。权叫它们“美国见闻”吧，多少效颦于巴尔的“美国游记”。：）
曾见美国没有文化的说法，这么说的都是国人，有些不以为然（呵呵，找砖呢：））。美国历史短暂，但美国有文化。美国文化不能说深，但既厚又重：绝大部分是由几百年来的移民，包括论坛上的居住美国的朋友们而组成。是个大杂烩。如果当今世界上，哪个文化冲击力最为强大，就是美国的POP CULTURE，特别是在中国，实际是很让人担心的。POP CULTURE这么浅薄却代表人心所向，真让人不能理喻。
不过这只是美国文化中的一部分。美国有光荣与梦想，也有铜臭与失望；有广阔的平原，壮丽的山川，丰富的资源；有憨厚善良的人民，也有肮脏的政治家金融家资本家。美国有世界上最为众多的大小私人基金会，资助着从科学研究到普及某方面的常识性教育的活动。数不胜数。说来话题就长了。我只能看到美国生活中的点滴。贴到这里与大家分享交流，作为了解美国的一部分。

匹兹堡的早春
“美国见闻”的其它帖子：
一个平常的春晨，在上班的路上，我发现河谷里雾气蒸腾。夜里春雷急雨，空气中湿度大，一定是山谷藏有寒气，水气析出成雾。
站在坡上，雾气之外，比较容易照相。
这条沟壑的溪流，是Monongahela 河的支流，叫做Nine Mile Run，长九英里，覆盖了六平方英里泄水面积。匹兹堡是个山城，有山便有溪流。十年前，这条溪流为城市污水污染，臭不可闻。溪流所流经城市最大的公园Frick Park（如果这个系列持续下去，我会介绍城市公园。其土地都是由重工业起家的富人捐赠给城市的），堪为一害。千禧年前后，一个由政府和民间合作的组织成立了（Nine Mile Run Watershed Association）。由US Army Corps of Engineers（这个联邦政府部门负责美国所有水路），州，市政府参与，第一期耗资九百万美元的生态工程开始进行，这同时也是一个生态平衡的研究课题。他们重新设计了水流，在许多地方建立了净水池塘，放养了不同的细菌，降解水里的污染物质。两年内便成效显著。现在水质清澈。另一方面，在水流区域，栽种美国土生的植物，除掉侵略性的外来植物，比如挪威枫树等。这是去年秋天的两张照片，清水流潺，诱人涉入： 
溪流里有水净化的装置，上游是小水坝，这个圆水泥桶，不知什么地干活。 
回到这个雾气弥漫的早上，缥缈的雾里，隐约见山那边的人家。有些象国画：）

雾气里潮湿的山坡上，daffodils 开放，缀着露水的花低垂，daffodils中文黄水仙。中国常见的水仙，室内栽培的，英文叫paper narcissus ，与daffodils是亲戚。其实 所谓黄水仙，有其它变种，白的，粉的，红心的，都有。这种黄色的生命里最旺盛。早春的野地里，山石下，落叶中，不知不觉地盛开，如同仙子。 
英国诗人William Wordsorth 的诗里，是这么形容这种开于早春，美丽异常而又易生易长的植物（王医生也曾引用过）：
I WANDER'D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine,
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch'd in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
下午山石边，阳光里的daffodils：
这所精美的建筑，Heinz Chapel， 我总想与人分享： ）这所教堂两边种植了一群开黄花的树，不知其名，他处也未曾见过。
Heinz Chapel 由Heinz 家族捐赠，这家富人卖酸黄瓜起家，后来改卖Ketchup 。有小朋友的家，没有不知道的。中国人爱叫它番茄酱，实际不是。但中文叫什么我也不知道。：（
Heinz ，此地大族。八十年代， John Heinz是宾州共和党的参议员， 温和共和党人，很得人心，曾有人看好将来作为竞选总统人。但他居然没有将来，在费城直升飞机失事，英年早逝。他遗孀Teresa Heinz，后嫁与民主党参议员John Kerry。Kerry前次与布什竞选失败，这是不久前的时事。想必大家还有印象。
Heinz Chapel是Henry John Heinz，H.J. Heinz Company创始人给匹兹堡大学的礼物，以此纪念他的母亲Anna Margaretta Heinz。这所建筑一九三三年破土，三八年竣工。正是钢城的兴旺时期。外观上仍为传统歌德式建筑，实际建筑上采用现代方式，用了钢结构。最为著名的是彩铅玻璃窗，与欧洲的旧教堂媲美。23 面彩窗，四千多平方英尺，用了二十五万块玻璃。
可以照全的小玻璃窗。里面装饰用的全部是北美硬橡木：

另外奇特的是，这教堂里有圣经，也有可兰经，犹太圣经。去年夏天我们在这里参加一个婚礼，就是同时用犹太仪式和天主教仪式举行的。在这里结婚要排很长的队。对于我这个不信西教的人，很欣赏这种不同宗教能同时祈祷的豁达。
再贴几种刚开的花儿：
Magnolia 的一种（Star Magnolia，不常见） ，我知道英文是Magnolia，中文呢？木兰乎玉兰乎？好好摆渡了一把，竟然结论木兰就是玉兰，更糊涂了：
