This “Underground City” is a network of pedestrian tunnels that runs 28 kilometers beneath the office towers of downtown Toronto and is the largest underground shopping complex in the world. It connects 50 building, contains 1200 shops, and 5 subway stops. In 1900, Eaton’s Department store decided to connect their flagship store at Yonge and Queen with their bargain annex located behind City Hall. A tunnel was built becoming the first underground pedestrian pathway in Toronto. By 1917, there were 5 underground tunnels connecting various buildings, and when Union Station opened, a path was built to the Royal York Hotel so guests wouldn’t have to go outside during the winter.A colour coded directional system was implemented in the early 1990s within the various buildings so pedestrians can navigate through the PATH with red ‘P’ for south, orange ‘A’ for west, blue ‘T’ for north and yellow ‘H’ for east.

On the underground PATH of First Canadian Place at King and Bay, Prairie Girl Bakery has a small counter which you might not notice, except for the huge line of drooling women waiting to get their Prairie Girl cupcake on. Made fresh every day, you have mouth watering choices like Banana with Peanut Butter Icing, Carrot with Cream Cheese Icing, Chocolate with Peppermint Icing and topped with Peppermints, Peanut Butter and Jelly or my favourite, Vanilla topped with Roasted Coconut Icing.
