Build me a son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; Let him learn to stand up in the storm; let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high; one who will learn to laugh, yet never forget how to weep; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, the meekness of true strength.

General of the Army Douglas MacArthur was an American general and field marshal of the Philippine Army. He was a Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign.
Arthur MacArthur, Jr., and Douglas MacArthur were the first father and son to each be awarded the medal. He was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the U.S. Army, and the only man ever to become a field marshal in the Philippine Army.
