Blue Spruce

The Blue Spruce™ Award

(JK-Grade 2, picture books)
The Blue Spruce™ Award program brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to children between the ages of 4 and 7 (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2). For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books.

This program promotes reading for enjoyment and begins to develop a child’s skill in evaluating a picture book based on story, text and pictures.

Silver Birch

The Silver Birch® Award

(Grades 3-6, fiction, non-fiction)
The Silver Birch® Award is comprised of three separate lists: Fiction, Non-Fiction and Express. Our Express list is made up of both Fiction and Non-Fiction titles and is geared to the more reluctant reader. The Silver Birch® program is meant for readers aged 8 to 12, (Grades 3-6) with the Express list typically suited to readers in Grade 3 and 4.

Red Maple

The Red Maple™ Award

(Grades 7-8, fiction, non-fiction every other year)
The Red Maple™ Award reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students ages 12 to 13, in Grades 7 and 8. This program includes a Fiction list every year and every other year Red Maple also offers a Non-Fiction list. This program aims to get readers engaging in conversation around the books and encourages them to use critical thinking while reading.

White Pine

The White Pine™ Award

(Grades 9-12, fiction, non-fiction every other year)
The White Pine™ Award reading program offers teens of all ages the opportunity to read the best of Canada's recent young titles. Each year, a Fiction list is offered and every other year a Non-Fiction list is nominated, so readers can choose from two lists.
This program promotes reading for enjoyment and familiarizes teenagers with great Canadian books.

Le Prix Peuplier

(picture books, less text, simpler subject matters, perfect for read alouds)
Le Prix Peuplier is a reading program that invites young people to participate in read-alouds of French books written by Canadian authors. Students are then invited to vote for their favourite book.

(livres d’images, moins de texte, sujets simples, convenant parfaitement à la lecture à haute voix)
Le Prix Peuplier est un programme de lecture qui invite les jeunes à participer à des lectures à haute voix d'albums écrits par des auteurs franco-canadiens.  Les jeunes sont ensuite invités à voter pour leur livre préféré.

Le Prix Tamarac

(chapter books from 100 to 250 pages, smaller text with little or no illustrations, more complicated verb tenses and vocabulary)
Le Prix Tamarac is a program that invites young people to read by allowing them to vote for their favourite books (fiction and non-fiction) from a selection of the best Canadian books written in French.

(miniromans de 100 à 250 pages, texte plus petit avec peu ou pas d’illustrations, temps de verbes et vocabulaire plus complexes)
Le Prix Tamarac est un programme qui invite les jeunes à lire en leur permettant de voter pour leurs livres préférés (romans et documentaires) parmi une sélection des meilleurs livres canadiens rédigés en français.
