女儿的诗 (6) I Do Not Understand

I do not understand
     Why deviants are punished
     Why the soft naivete of children must be replaced by hard cynicism
     Why people are pressured to conform to society's standards

But Most of all, I do not understand
     Why people laugh at others' pain
      (I've seen so many people
     profit from humiliation,
     growing rich off of freak shows
     embarrassing tapes,
     and one foolish moments.)

What I understand most are people
     Who take just a second to take breath a little
     To laugh at themselves
     To stop taking everything so seriously
     Who take just a little time out of their hectic lives
     To watch the sunset.
