美国著名大学之十九

卡内基梅陇的名字总向我暗示着某种贵族的渊源和名望。她的昵称“Tartans”和吉祥物“Scottish Terrier”（高原猎犬）都带着苏格兰血统。卡内基（或译成卡耐基）和梅隆（或译成梅陇）在上世纪确实是美国的两大金融财团家族。

根据卡内基的设想，学院将为当时的匹兹堡培养3年制所需的工业专门人才。最初该学院包括科学与技术学校（培养工艺师和助理工程师）；艺术学校（培养设计师和手艺人）；培养制造业和建筑业的学徒工和熟练工学校，以及一所培训家庭主妇和秘书的玛格丽特·莫莱逊·卡内基学校。初始的“Carnegie Technology Schools”是个原原本本“技校”。可以想象1900年的开拓者们的眼光是多么的朴实。正是有了这些坚实的基础，才造就了这所理工专业和艺术专业(特别是戏剧专业)双双顶顶有名的大学。计算机专业更是与与麻省理工学院、斯坦福大学和加州大学伯克利分校并列全美榜首。

坐落在纽约和芝加哥连线的中点的匹兹堡是做为连接大西洋沿岸和中西部地区的纽带发展起来的，是美国最重要的城市之一。CMU的校园离市中心不远，周围环境不错，较富裕的社区，紧邻公园，博物馆，医院，包括匹兹堡大学在内的学校等文化教育机构和设施。也许是1900年建校的缘故，学校的建筑初具十九世纪末叶Beaux-Arts architecture的法国风格，与东部的早期的校园建筑有所不同。后来的建筑则更多是现代的International Style，总体来说还算协调。

卡内基先生的名言—My heart is in the work（我心于业），是这所大学的校训，即使经历了百年内数次重大革新，这样的信念依旧根深蒂固融于整个大学文化中。卡内基梅隆大学对学生的训练非常严格，课业繁重，在普林斯顿评论（Princeton Review）每年“最累大学排名”中，总是高居前几位，与加州理工学院、麻省理工学院、芝加哥大学、普林斯顿大学等同为美国乃至全世界训练最为严酷的大学。

截至2017年卡内基梅隆大学的校友共获得20个诺贝尔奖，12个图灵奖，9个奥斯卡，114个艾米奖，44个托尼奖。与MIT一样，她没有医学，法学等职业学院，（在这些方面，她同样是与她“西边的近邻”进行合作），但她的人文艺术和科学工程都是很优秀的。除了上面提到的计算机和戏剧等顶尖学科外，她的总体实力也排在美国高校的前列。
