China is not encircling Taiwan, for the latter is part of China, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters told CNN during an interview on Monday, sparking controversy against the British artist.

In an interview with CNN's Michael Smerconish, Waters responded to comments from Smerconish that China was "encircling Taiwan", saying: "They [the Chinese forces] are not encircling Taiwan! Taiwan is part of China."

"And that's been absolutely accepted by the whole international community since 1948, and if you don't know that, you are not reading enough," the singer added.

The comments led to a large-scale campaign of hate against the British artist.

China announced carrying out fresh military drills around Taiwan Monday, days after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island escalated tensions between the two powers.

Pelosi's visit led China to announce ending cooperation with the United States on a number of issues such as climate change, anti-drug efforts, and military talks.

The US official's visit to Taipei triggered a series of Chinese large-scale military drills east of the Taiwan Strait, as well as massive rows between Beijing and Washington.

"Try and figure out what the United States would do if the Chinese were putting nuclear-armed missiles into Mexico or Canada," Waters stressed.

Waters responded to questions about his This Is Not a Drill live show, which sees an image of Joe Biden appear among pictures of "war criminals".

He backed his position by underlining that this was because Biden was "fueling the fire in the Ukraine."

It is a "huge crime," he said. "Why won't the United States of America encourage [Volodymyr] Zelensky, or whatever his name is, the [Ukrainian] President, to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war?"

He went on to say that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was to do with the "action and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border."

Waters brought up the ratification of the Minsk agreement, calling on Zelensky to explain why "when he stood on the platform of ratifying the Minsk agreements, which he did when he was elected by 73% of the Ukrainian population that was able to vote."

"After that, somebody whispered in his ear, or he completely changed his mind about making peace in the Donbass and about solidifying the Minsk agreement and making peace with their Russian neighbors, and obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war. You're killing - we don't know how many Ukrainians," Waters underscored, holding Zelensky accountable for what has taken place in Ukraine.

His position backs that of Moscow, who had been warning NATO and the European Union against pushing toward the Russian border, but its warnings fell on deaf ears and culminated in the Ukraine war.

The artist butted heads with journalist Michael Smerconish on CNN

      Roger Waters

Roger Waters has never been shy about his political stances, and his This Is Not a Drill tour begins with a blunt message on the big screens: “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd, but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people, you might do well to fuck off to the bar.”

The former Pink Floyd member recently sat down with CNN’s Michael Smerconish (who notably loves Waters’ music but disagrees with some of his political views) to defend some of the extreme messages during his show, such as including president Joe Biden in a slideshow of “war criminals.”

“Well, he’s fuelling the fire in the Ukraine, for a start – that is a huge crime,” he answered when asked why he added Biden in the lineup. “Why won’t the United States of America encourage [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, the [Ukrainian] president, to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war that’s killing… We don’t know how many Russians.”

Smerconish told Waters he’s “got it reversed” by “blaming the party that got invaded” but Waters defended his stance: “Well, any war, when did it start? What you need to do is look at the history, and you can say, ‘Well it started on this day.’ You could say it started in 2008 – this war is basically about the action and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border, which they promised they wouldn’t do when [Mikhail] Gorbachev negotiated the withdrawal of the USSR from the whole of Eastern Europe.”

He also dismissed Smerconish’s comment that Americans are “liberators.” “You got into World War 2 because of Pearl Harbor. You were completely isolationists [beforehand],” Waters argued. “Thank gGd the Russians had already won the bloody war by then. Twenty-three million Russians died, protecting you and me from the Nazi menace.”

“I would suggest that you… go away and read a bit more, and try to figure out what the US would do if the Chinese were putting nuclear armed missiles into Mexico and Canada,” he added.

When Smerconish then noted that the Chinese are “too busy encircling Taiwan as we speak,” Waters snapped back with this proclamation: “Taiwan is part of China. That has been absolutely accepted by the whole of international community since 1948. If you don’t know that you aren’t reading enough. You are believing your side’s propaganda. You can’t have a conversation about human rights and Taiwan without actually doing the reading.”

“The Chinese didn’t invade Iraq and kill a million people in 2013,” Waters added. “Who have the Chinese invaded and slaughtered?”

“Their own,” Smerconish answered. “Bullocks! That’s absolute nonsense! Absolute nonsense!” Waters responded

George Waters: Are you a rugged individualist who likes Chinese opera?

You may be many things — a gardener, a food dehydrator, a Shar Pei advocate — but that also makes you a demographic.

I looked in my Facebook settings and discovered that according to FB, I am an “engaged shopper.” I have never bought anything on there, so I have to wonder if my tendency to post kitten photos says something subliminal about my buying habits. FB also seems to know I am a parent, because it can see in my photos, I guess, the circles under my eyes.

FB thinks I am the friend of “people who recently moved”; yes, in that I am an American and that I still draw breath. If you are reading this, and you do not know somebody who recently moved, you are in the “dead, but still able to read” demographic. You are hard to market to, but I bet a Scientologist on his third espresso could get it done.

Politically, the FB categories are liberal, moderate and conservative, with “very” preceding the first and last of those. (I would love for there to be a “very moderate” category, the icon being a guy with his arms crossed and his chin raised in a resolute pout while wearing a “You both make some very valid points” T-shirt.)

FB pegs me as “very liberal,” which I feel is an exaggeration, since I have never even “liked” a Lady Gaga video. I know extremists on both ends of the spectrum, and I feel like a centrist in comparison, but FB can’t sell a centrist a sports car, I guess.

Even though she looks like she stepped out of a poster for Irish tourism, FB thinks my wife is African-American. Perhaps it is because she is “likely to engage in political content.” Unlike me, she is labeled a “commuter,” even though I actually drive a little farther to work than she does. Maybe she once “liked” somebody’s post about tires.

She is also considered to be “close friends of women who have a birthday in the next week.” I love the specificity of that ad category. I imagine others, like “writers who doubt themselves more than twice a minute” and “men over 50 who like the idea of celery but not actual celery.”

We like to think we are individuals, but we are really just walking demographics, just trying to get along in this crazy world without having to change brands.
