AA Gill died of cancer aged 62 yesterday. It is a shock to everyone who is used to increasing longevity of the mankind in general. Mick Jagger just become a father again age 73 and AA Gill old boss 85 years old Rupert Murdoch has just launched the second take over bid of sky.
I become Times reader and subscribler when Rupert Murdoch tempted the public with cut throat price of 10p for the paper he just took over. Among the current affairs, business news and market analysis of the paper, I discovered Gill's column of restuarant reviews and became an instant fan.
Gill was a fearless critic and he would not hesitate to say something brutal if he honestly believe it's true. Obviously he knew lots about food and as a disleyxia his command of language was remarkable and you would not be in any doubt about his opinion of the restuarant he was reviewing by awarding his own system of stars. He sometimes gave no star, haha.
i fell out with AA Gill, when I read his article of shooting a bahoon in Africa, he said he shot the poor creature just to feel what was like to kill. From then on I stopped reading his column. Now that he is dead all it's forgiven. I could not help remember the pleasure his articles once given me and the disappointment I felt when I seeked his column and found a guest writer in his place with AA Gill is away.
Now he is really away will always be away. RIP
