Go Cardinal
Once a cardinal, alway a cardinal
It was Louisiana on a hot summer dusk.
The air was sticky and the moon was bright,
perfect for one special awesome firefly
to shine his mighty, fearsome light.
Val was the name of this giant, brave bug,
Val as in valiant, like a great king’s knight
for every day of Val’s long-lived life
he’d light up his bottom and smile at the sight.
Now, things were different on the other side,
for there lived a tiny frog named Pine.
She’d watch Val light up every night
and think “Bet that bug tastes mighty fine”.
So when Val awoke like any other night
and worked himself up to shine real bright,
Pine was watching, hunger on her mind,
waiting to give Val his final fright.
As golden Val hovered within reach,
Pine opened her mouth as if to greet,
the poor giant bug who had yet to see
that he was about to become a tasty treat.
But Pine would not, could not eat the handsome bug,
for he was majestic, bright and fearless.
Pine cried out at the sight and Val turned to see,
a slender green frog looking awfully cheerless.
Hesitated, yes, but brave to the end
Val flew to the weeping frog to say,
“Hello, fair lady, why do you cry?
Has it not been a very good day?”
“large and juicy you may be,
I ain’t ever seen anything so darn pretty!”
Pine sobbed and croaked and croaked and sobbed,
till Val was overwhelmed with pity.
“I think you’re lovely,” Val announced.
He twitched his wings and brightened his light,
“Why you are the moon and I the sun,
oh, together we would be such a sight!”
Pine blinked her two large froggy eyes,
flicked her long pink tongue aside
a shy smile spreading across her green face,
and her slimy froggy heart was filled with sunshine.
Val hugged her olive head,
Pine gave a happy croak and took to flight,
and together brave Val and Pine the sweetie pie,
made their way into the Louisiana night.
