WE ARE DOING WELL

This Easter Day, four ladies, Hui, Fang, Feng, and Wen, met together at my house. Fourteen years ago, we got to know each other at a college station in the US. After several years, we said goodbye to each other and went to different states with our individual family for living.

Long time no seeing each other, the first greeting from the four ladies was, “We are doing well.” What impressed me was that they were all smiles like babies. I knew no everyone's life always was perfect during their lives. But, they always have faith, believe in themselves and trust their journey. Their smiles were the symbols of hope and strength.

In fact, no matter where do you live, everybody is challenging something. Nobody’s life is always perfect. Someone just is better to hide it and would not like to share it with the public. However, here, the four ladies would like to share their stories to encourage other people’s life. Their stories told me why they think they are all doing well.

Hui and Her Family

Hui is the oldest one among four ladies. She retired from a company due to her poor health condition. Now, she titles her an unprofessional writer. Her work involves all kinds of writings and reviews for several publishers as a volunteer. She doesn’t make much more money from her jobs but she is really enjoying what she is doing because she finds self-value.

Hui’s husband services in a company as a scientist. The company is not big and also not famous, but he loves his job. He would like to dedicate to work for the company and makes his great efforts to support the family.

Hui's son is doing the second year residence at the Washington University in St. Louis. He left China at age 9. So far, he still can speak good Mandarin. His supervisor often assigns him to take care of the patients who are Mandarin speakers only.  He is very proud of his special language skill.

Fang and Her Family

Fang is teaching at the University of Texas. The postdoctoral research fellow experience in Princeton University highlighted her resume and promoted her to hold the current position.

Fang’s husband also had experienced as a postdoctoral research fellow at the MD Anderson Hospital, a famous hospital globally. During that period, he took the time to learn some courses and passed a professional qualification examination for obtaining a medical certificate. Now, he is working at a lab in the field of medical image processing. Jumping from physics to medicine is not easy, but he made it.

Fang’s son has chosen to be a medical doctor as his career. He is studying at the Baylor College of Medicine. Junior year. He came to the US at age 10. He speaks three kinds of languages, Mandarin, English, and Spanish. That must enhance his background.

Feng and Her Family

Feng is an engineer and working at the same company with her husband. The couple has high three: holding high education degrees (Ph.D.), taking the high positions, and earning a high salary. They have two kids: a boy and a girl. Everyone admires her family. However, life is not always perfect like their expectation.

The older one is a boy, who is the kid of Feng and her ex-husband. Previously, the boy had lived with Feng’s ex-mother in law in China. Feng has experienced a different time to advise her ex-mother in law to allow her son to move to the US for the middle and high education. The process lasted almost two years. Eventually, her ex-mother in law agreed to let the boy be with Feng.

The time has certificated Feng is right. Her son now is a Ph.D. candidate at MIT, and his professor calls him a young talent. Feng’s husband is a very gentle and generous man he loves Feng’s son and treats him as his biological son. The couple has paid the full tuition for the boy from the undergraduate school to graduate school. Now, the couple turns their attention to raise their daughter, a very beautiful girl.

Wen and Her Family

Wen is a nurse and previously she was a housewife. Her husband is a scientist at a top ten companies ranked globally. They have two children. The family has been living in several countries, and then finally settled down in the US. Frequently traveling made Wen become a strong woman spiritually and physically. During that period, it was her duty to taking care of the whole family, such as doing housework, taking care of two kids and supporting husband.

Moving to the USA, she gave birth to their second kid and later she enrolled in a nurse program at a local institution. Last year, she got a certificate. At the same time, her older kid graduated from graduate school at Brown University and found a CS engineer job in Silicon Valley. The younger one went to a high school. Wen was released a lot from the housework and started her new life. Now, she works in a hospital as a part-time nurse in the same city with her family because she still needs to keep an eye on the family.

The topics of this story were focused on the lives of four families. They immigrated to America from China for pursuing their dreams.  They brought their kids to the US and wished them to get the best education. Everyone experienced cultural shock, learning English, college education, unemployment, and starting a new career.  During their journey, anything happened is meant to be to teach them a lesson to help them to grow. They work harder and live better. They are all doing well.
