Halfway Reading the Dictionary

(2022-11-25 08:40:40) 下一个

Today, Bill reached page 990 of the American Heritage Dictionary, 4th ed.,

almost halfway. He started exactly three years ago and averaged 0.9 page a day.

He read the word Laputan on page 988:

Absurdly impractical or visionary, especially to the neglect of more useful

activity. [After the flying island of Laputa in Gulliver's Travels by

Jonathan Swift, where absurd projects are pursued and useful pursuits

    neglected.]

It felt serendipitous and seemed to describe this project perfectly.
