Antonioni constantly reminds us that we are not watching a play on stage. We don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing what we want as spectators in a playhouse. In a way, all film directors are dictators who force the audience to see what they desire through the camera lens.
Antonioni prefers images to convey the message rather than words. In this respect, he is the exact opposite of Ingmar Bergman, whose films depend heavily on dialogue. Shelley Winters and Lee Grant, both veterans of the Hollywood screen, provided excellent support for the cast. The picturesque setting of Rome added to the grandeur of the film.
