All the stars did a wonderful job in this movie. However, Jude Law's character, Dan, came across as someone who was unsure about what he wanted. He seemed CONFLICTED. When people don't know exactly what they are looking for, they have a tendency to play with other people's feelings.

Think of it as the characters and not specifically as the actors…how they are written…plus age is a factor. Jude is older than Alice and connects with Julia’s character Anna on a different level. Alice is young and the appearance thing goes away quick. She said “I amuse you but I bore you” which is very telling. She has the girlish young thing to her which can get annoying or boring after awhile but Anna is more woman like and interesting and they probably have good sex. Thats what I took away from it after watching the movie. Ive met girls that look like Natalie, just as gorgeous but after getting to know them, are just so un-appealing bc of their age. Not to say they dont have something to offer but sometimes not the best conversation. Just young ya know?
I think she chose Alice Ayers because she cared about him, but she still protected her true heart. With Clive Owen's Character in the movie, she gave her real name, but she didn't care about him, and he could not hurt her.
I was thinking that too. Realistically it’s probably just written by a British person and that’s why it sounds weird, Americans saying “did you phone her” and “do you fancy me” just sounds off
? @babayaga3098 If anything, I found this aspect most believable. The film takes place in London, and immigrants quickly adopt the native phrases and language they are surrounded by (I'm an American and have been in the UK for 18 years). I think the writing style is mainly down to him being a playwright.

@hackapump 2 months ago (edited) Alice is hardly an angel. Her whole life in London was a facade, her name isn't even Alice. Which allows her to disappear at the end of the movie knowing that Dan - (as well as all the rest of them) - will never be able to find her. Suggesting that the very reason she was in London to begin with was that she was on the run from a similar situation somewhere else. Which at the very least is a toxic pattern, pathological to at least some extent.
And Alice doesn't cry because of anything Larry did or said in this scene, she cries because she realises her man hasn't gotten over Anna.

Even if Alice did sleep with Larry, she didn't cheat on Dan because he broke up with her to be with Anna. As for Jane Jones/Alice Ayres using a fake name, I think she did that because she was moved by the memorial stone that told how Alice Ayres died rescuing 3 children from a fire - an act of bravery/courage that maybe Jane Jones was hoping she could aspire too? At the end of the day, lying about her name was squat compared to the betrayal that Dan committed against her. A really sad movie about how relationships can cut you to the core.
I don’t think Larry really slept with Alice. I think she lied to hurt Dan and get him to leave. He didn’t believe her and only cared about if Larry “got” her. She said that Larry asked nicely and really he was crude and aggressive (not nice).

You think when he says to Anna that he saw her postcard in the Hotel and later tells her he slept with a prostitute ….he was talking about Alice? It never occurred to me that’s what happened, mostly because Alice is in London, not NYC during this time. I also always believed that Alice never slept with Larry …she just told Dan she had because the truth just didn’t matter anymore. She’d ‘decided’not love Dan anymore.
