Devane was born on September 5, 1939, in Albany, New York,[2] the son of Joseph Devane, who had been Franklin D. Roosevelt's chauffeur when he was governor of New York.[3] His father was of Irish descent and his mother Kate had Dutch and German ancestry.[4] Devane graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany, and then the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City in 1962.[2]

We salute our former Polish Brothers in Arms. No. 303 Squadron RAF, also known as the 303rd "Tadeusz Ko?ciuszko Warsaw" Fighter Squadron, was one of two Polish squadrons that fought during the Battle of Britain along with No. 302 Squadron, of 16 total Polish squadrons during the Second World War. Flying Hawker Hurricanes, the squadron claimed the largest number of aircraft shot down of the 66 Allied fighter squadrons engaged in the Battle of Britain, even though it joined the fray two months after the battle had begun.

I grew up in Chicago. At that time, I believe, Chicago had more people of Polish descent than Warsaw, Poland. Had so many Polish friends and my dad’s small tool & die company employed several Polish people. One of my closest friends in high school was a Polish guy who was not only one of the most creative, but incredibly intelligent persons I knew. When I think of the history of Poland, and how it was invaded again and again over the centuries, yet still stood up and kept moving forward. I can’t help but having a tremendous amount of respect for their culture. The Russians refused to allow them to teach and speak their language. Through all of this, who are two of the most important Polish contributors to the field of science: Madam Curie (Sklodowska) and Copernicus. Then, look at WW-II. The original machine that was first used to crack the Enigma code the Germans used during the war, was first developed by Poland. It was called The Bomba. They knew they were going to be overrun by Germany, so they gave it to England. It was the foundation on which Turin built his Enigma machine. Don’t see much credit for that in any film I’ve seen about it. Believe me, I know that America has not credited others as well for many inventions produced here. So, my hats off those brave pilots from Poland who flew during the Battle of Britain!
