41. fall short of:
to fail to reach an amount or standard that was expected or hoped for, causing disappointment
没有达到预期值或标准

  • fell short of expectations
  • fall short of its goal
  • fall short of the best but be better
  • fall short by a large amount

42. single sb/sth outto choose one person or thing from a group for special attention, especially criticism or praise 选出, 挑出

43. dilapidated 毁坏的, 要塌似的, 荒废的

  • dilapidated buildings
  • a dilapidated old car
  • a dilapidated old house

    (注:学习这个比较难一点的词很有意思。 刚开始的时候,我练了很多次的发音dilapidated, dilapidated...  后来,在生活中当听到有人讲出这个词时,我几乎叫了起来:hold on one sec, 我知道这个词。)

44. bounds : [plural] legal or social limits 界线

45. abide by sth : to accept or obey an agreement, decision or rule 遵守

  • The judge is normally given almost unlimited latitude in whether or not he listens to a child and how much weight to give to the child’s wishes.

47. esprit de corps: the feelings, such as being proud and loyal, shared by members of a group of people OR: the common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group

48. odds: the probability that a particular thing will or will not happen 可能的机会; 优势; 成败的可能性

  • be at odds: to disagree

49. espouse: to become involved with or support an activity or opinion () 支持, 嫁娶, 赞成

50. level something against/at somebody: to accuse someone in public of doing something wrong

  • Charges of corruption have been levelled against him.
