　　刘志（印小天）是一个出身于乡下农村的苦孩子，其身世还有个不能见天日的秘密，他原来是一个亲生父母抛弃的私生子，被现在的养父母收养。奋发图强的刘 志经过努力考上大学，却因为穷困而差点放弃上学的机会，是哥哥刘强（张国强）跑到黑煤矿挖煤挣钱，逼着刘志去上大学。而刘强却因为恶劣的工作条件染上致命 的肺病。贫穷的刘志在大学里受尽歧视，又为了给哥哥治病费尽心机。身患绝症的哥哥让学新闻的刘志为他一样遭遇的矿工弟兄们伸张正义。
　　刘志的举动触动了黑煤矿背后的老板黎天光（郑晓宁），同样出身于贫苦农村的黎天光如今已经出人头地，为了维护自己的利益，黎天光不惜对刘志等人进行一 系列的陷害和报复。而黎天光却不知道，他和刘志之间有着千丝万楼、意想不到的关系，仇敌、父子……
