Oh my......
I froze while being verbally abused, hearing language I had never encountered in my two decades of education. I was in shock until a colleague reminded me, "The next parent has been waiting!" Suddenly, I realized 20 minutes had passed. I had endured their abuse for that long, trying to remain as professional and humble as possible. When I saw AP passing by, I reported to him immediately, "E's parents used abusive language during the interview." J replied, "That is no good, I will follow up."
During dinner time, while I was queuing for my turn, I was greeted by my colleagues. I recounted what had happened, and then I heard the following: "They have abused everyone who has taught their daughter. Once, she was even yelling at the AP..." and much more that I could never have imagined a civilized person would do. A few more staff joined in, recounting the 'nasty' history of that parent. Alright, I was just the unlucky one who happened to have that unpleasant encounter.
My encounter must have been the latest bombshell news in the college. These two abusive figures are notoriously famous here. Over the next few days, more and more colleagues tried to comfort me and offered advice and strategies to avoid being abused again. Of course, I am confident that I won't be abused again by adopting what I have learned from this 'lesson'. I have to be honest with myself; this has had some detrimental effect on me.
Thank God, I am blessed with the opportunity to build up my resilience.
Life is tough! Hahaha.
It's true that being a teacher gives you more opportunity to meet people, to be around kids of varied background and families. But never be afraid of speaking up for yourself when things like this came up. Don't be too humble:-) Good luck with your new job!
