In 1976, 经历半年多共和党提名苦战，里根最终败给福特。在GOP convention,里根意外收到福特邀请上台发言。在毫无准备的情况下，里根做了下述即兴演讲，团结了GOP, 同时奠定1982获胜的基础

这个即兴演讲是里根著名讲话之一，据当时记者报道，GOP的代表们听过后开始意识到：“we nominated wrong guy."
