《How I Met My Husband》
by Alice Munro
Summary by 仲夏百合
Edie was fifteen years old when she started her first job; she worked for Dr. and Mrs. Peebles as a servant. She was kind-hearted and beautiful. Her life in the rural village was plain and dull until one day an airplane landed there.
Chris Watters, the pilot, was running an airplane-tour business to earn a living. Everyone in the neighborhood was excited and wanted to see the airplane. Edie, too shy of strangers, did not go.
One day, the Peebles went out. With her curiosity and excitement, Edie dressed up with Mrs. Peebleses’ makeup and a pretty long dress. She looked beautiful. Chris happened to see her. Edie was afraid that Mrs. Peebles would find out about this. Chris promised he wouldn’t tell.
Alice Kelling, Chris’ fiancée, followed at Chris’ heel and stayed overnight in the Peebleses’ house. Edie could tell, however, Alice and Chris were not very intimate. While Alice and Mrs. Peebles went for a picnic the next day, Chris decided to leave. Before he went, he kissed Edie and promised to write a letter and let her know where he was. Alice finally found out that Chris ran away from her again. She vented her anger out on Edie and then left as well. Mrs. Peebles was not very friendly afterward. However, Edie did not mind because she concentrated on waiting for her letter from Chris. She waited happily; she was always smiling when the mailman got there. The mailman told her that she got the smile he had been looking for all day.
Chris did not keep the promise. The letter never came. Edie’s heart was heavy like a lump of lead. But she still smiled when met the mailman because she thought the mailman was counting on it; he didn’t have an easy life with the winter driving ahead.
Edie finally realized that she was waiting for nothing, so she stopped.
Edie’s smile and kindness impressed the mailman. One day, he called Edie and asked her to go to a movie. Two years later, they were happily married.
