Li Qingshan answered, “Zhang Yunchang died. I’m alive and I can still make love, can’t I? Fuck you!”

His wife went on, “I heard from Zhao that Dai is living in the Zhang’s house and dresses herself like a fairy, able to tempt many men. I do think that you even want to have sex with her if you see her.”

Li Qingshan thought a while. Then he suddenly got up and jumped off the bed, saying to his wife:

“Damn! I’m being silly. We have been working on the account of exploitations for half a year, but I have got little profit. Dai is rich now. Why not go to the Zhang’s house for some money? I’ll go to gather the village leaders and militia, and tomorrow we’ll go there.”

The next morning, 70 to 80 farmers came to the Zhang’s house for compensations of exploitations. They laughed and sang all the way. It was 10 o’clock when they reached there. They pounded at the gate with clubs, shouting:

“Dai Min! Landlady! Get out, you bitch!”

“Zhang, take Dai out.”

Zhang Yunxuan was not at home. He was in the office of the Provincial Commerce Chamber. Dai’s sons and Zhang Yan were at school. Madame Wang told Dai that the farmers came and claimed to get her back to the village. Dai was scared at the thought. She fainted. Madame Wang asked Mr. Song for help. They gave first-aid to her with fingers and cold water. Then, Dai came round.

Madame Wang wiped Dai’s face, asking, “Why are you so scared? Yang is calling the public security office for help. We are a family of high prestige. How can we be treated in this way?”

At this time, a maidservant came, telling, “The PLA soldiers are coming to protect us.” She then ran away to get Tang informed of it.

Dai was amazed at this. Zhang Yunxuan was indeed a man of prestige, Dai thought. He broke away from the Kuomintang leadership to join the Communists. Now he was influential. She looked outside through the gate. True! A line of PLA soldiers with guns in their hands and grenades at their waists were standing in front of the gate as guards. They were asking the farmers to leave.

Li Qingshan shouted, “Damn! Why do the PLA soldiers help the rich instead of the poor? We came for the compensations of exploitations from the landlady? Are you guarding us or her?”

The public security office and residents’ association workers also came. A worker of the Residents’ Association said, “Mr. Zhang is a Kuomintang general who broke away from the Kuomintang leadership for the Communists. He and his family should be protected. You should ask the local government for help instead of quarreling here. Making trouble in public is illegal.”

Li Qingshan was annoyed. He jumped up a stone lion in front of the gate, shouting at the other farmers, “Are we coming for trouble making? We come here according to the government’s order. If you make us annoyed further, we’ll break into the courtyard and take away the landlady.”

The people present were aware that Li Qingshan was the head of the farmers. Then, a public security office worker asked Li Qingshan to come down and talked with him, “Don’t be so rash! We’re from the public security office and work for the mass as well as the Communists. Calm down! General Zhang is a man protected by the provincial government. Tell your idea to our government at the district, city and provincial levels. Then, we’ll know what to do to help you.”

Li Qingshan felt relieved at this. He told them that the government should help the poor unconditionally. How could the government help the rich? Damn!

The farmers threw stones and tiles at the Zhang’s gate despite the soldiers’ warnings. They came to harass the house from time to time in groups.
