The average life expectancy of Shanghai citizens reached 81.28 years in 2008, an increase of 0.2 years from 2007. Xu Jianguang, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, announced this at a press conference held by the Municipal Government of Shanghai on February 17. The average life span for men reached 79.06 years, while for women it reached 83.50 years.

In addition, the maternal mortality rate for women living in Shanghai was 12.36/100,000. For women registered with permanent residence in Shanghai, the rate was 6.91/100,000. The infant mortality rate of the city was 0.561 percent. The rate for infants registered with permanent residence in Shanghai was 0.296 percent. According to these key health indicators, in 2008 Shanghai citizens\' health maintained the standard of developed countries and regions in the world.
