The Nobel Prize amount is set by the Swedish kronor (SEK), 10 million per full Nobel Prize. (That's around one & a half million US dollars.)
Each Nobel Prize consists of a gold medal, a diploma bearing a citation, and a sum of money, the amount of which depends on the income of the Nobel Foundation.
A sum of $1,300,000 accompanied each prize in 2005 and has increased each year to the current amount- 1.4 million US dollars in 2009.)
A Nobel Prize is either given entirely to one person, divided equally between two persons, or is shared by three persons. In the latter cases, two together can receive a one-half share or each of the three persons can receive a one-third share of the prize.
Two prizes can be awarded in the same field i.e. if the prize was withheld from the previous year (due to a refusal to accept the award,or a governments refusing to allow their citizens to accept an award) then the current year's prize and last year's prize can be awarded in the same year.
Those who win a prize, whether they accept it or not, are nevertheless entered into the list of Nobel laureates with the remark "declined the prize."
