Watch video of the Jan. 13, 2011, class "The Musician's World." Mitchell Korn explores the mind set, culture, training, daily preparation and perspectives of the symphonic musician. Audience members learn about rehearsal regiments, the role of the musician's teacher(s); the complexity of musical and intellectual tasks; and the challenges of weekly learning and performing tremendous volumes of notes and music.

The class is part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's "How to Listen to Classical Music" class, presented by Giancarlo Guerrero, music director and conductor, Nashville Symphony and Mitchell Korn, vice president for education and community, Nashville Symphony and Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music Distinguished Lecturer for Music and Community.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt supports lifelong learning. It is an organization that provides adults with educational programs, stimulating tours and trips, and a variety of social events. The program reflects the high academic standards espoused by the university on all levels. By offering non-credit courses, students benefit from the stimulus of lectures and discussions in an informal and relaxed environment. The student body is a cohesive group that projects a true sense of community, always welcoming new members.

The Division of Public Affairs sponsors Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Vanderbilt.
