这出同名音乐剧是根据雨果的描写大革命前夕的法国的巨著“悲惨世界” （Les Miserables）改编的。在上世纪80及90年代对音乐剧产生了巨大影响。是那个时期音乐剧的杰出代表。作曲家, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg's 的音乐主题虽然有些重复，但那优美的旋律，激动人心的歌曲总能深刻感染并触摸到观众的心灵。

On My Own 背景： “On My Own” 是音乐剧“悲惨世界”中悲剧性人物爱潘妮（Eponine）的一个代表性唱段，是剧中最受欢迎的曲目之一，爱潘妮也是一个非常令人同情和喜爱的剧中角色。爱潘妮是小旅店老板的女儿，她一直执着地深爱着学生马吕斯（Marius），但是马吕斯只把她当作朋友，马吕斯爱的是珂赛特（Cosette）。一天，爱潘妮在帮马吕斯送一封给珂赛特的信后，独自走在街头，感到非常孤独悲伤，她幻想着马吕斯就在自己身边，于是唱起了这首歌。
