If, upon seeing the title, you thought I was going to talk about Mr. and Ms. Smith, well, think again!
According to Wiktionary, The word "smith" can be a noun, meaning
- A craftsperson who works metal into desired forms using a hammer and other tools, sometimes heating the metal to make it more workable, especially a blacksmith.
- (archaic) An artist.
and a verb, meaning
- To forge, to form, usually on an anvil; by heating and pounding.
I know all these definitions are pretty dry and abstract, but please bear with me. The really interesting part is the various kinds of craftspersons there are (also from Wiktionary):
- ironsmith, blacksmith
- platinumsmith
- silversmith
- tinsmith, whitesmith
- goldsmith
- weaponsmith, swordsmith
In addition, there is another word "wordsmith", according to an article I read recently.
Now, do you think it is worth knowing the smiths, in addition to the Smiths?
