Insider information for job hunting

Just saw someone recomended this video and it makes perfect sense to me. It's a great video for someone who is looking for a job.

I've heard majority of the contents back in school but it's still a very good resource of information to go back and review it from time to time.

Summary of certain part of this lecture:

Networking is the number one source in finding out the non-advertised jobs.

If there is no job ad of the company you are interested in, use https://news.google.com/ to find out the news about this company, find the keys words...

Resume – online can put city and state there. Email account has to be professional. Objective – do put it there in WIFT style such as: I’m looking for a position where I could use my skills / background to increase your profitability, or to improve your team’s facility, or to help you grow your company… This objective is your sales letter to tell the hiring manager what they’ll get if they bought you on board.

Do keep your resume short (one page). If you have a lot of experience, bring the longer resume for your interview when they want more details.

Your resume is to get you an interview. It should only include the highlights relate to that particular job. That’ll make the hiring manager wondering. To find out, they either have to call you or have you come in. So leave some stuff missing in your resume with just enough stuff that makes them interested.

SKILLS (3 COLUMNS) – you want to entices them to read the rest of your resume. So you want to highlight (one to three key words), with most import skills there that are related to that opening.

 Same with jobs and education listing.

You want to go through the job ad and find the key words that are in the ad. For example, team player, leader, research... Your resume: work well with others, great manager, great at looking things up. DON’T DO THAT!!! You need to make your resume unique for each job you are applying.

If you don’t know the job ad, go to their website and learn as much as you can about them, go to news.google.com and read the news articles about them, and look for any key words they use about a company.

WORK EXPERIENCE – in this style since they don’t care ABC company and only care what you did there. So make what you did big “Manager of whatever from this date to this date at ABC company, what you did.” No bullet points anywhere other than on the top. Make your resume look nice with plenty of white space there. MACRO writing. Make them short and don’t have to be complete sentences. Experience doesn’t have to be in chronological order. It can be in relevance order. For example, some job, 2 years, next relevant job, 1 year, next relevant job, 3 year. Don’t put dates there because they will be out of order. If the employer is interested in your resume, they will call you and find out those dates. That's the purpose of your resume - to get at least a phone conversation or on-site interview.

GAP – have a baby, put it there with time.

EDUCATION – same thing, your degree should be big, not the school you are graduated from. You may put completion date if you haven't got it yet.

OTHER – community volunteer work, are you well rounded (an important thing now) because they don’t want you to burn out? Community services, volunteer work, leadership role ... certifications required for the job, licenses, association...

DO NOT at the bottom put "references are available upon request".

Cover letter – 2~3 paragraphs, very simple to read. It should be a blown up of objectives (WIFT*). Tell the employer how they are going to benefit by bringing you on board. (to be continued)
