Garrett McNamara: Surfer rides 90 foot wave (World Record)(zt)

(2011-11-10 03:43:36) 下一个

Fearless surfer Garrett McNamara has smashed a world record by riding a 90ft wave off the coast of Portugal.

The daredevil American used a jetski tow to help get him out to the vast swell in Praia do Norte, Nazare, where he managed to catch a lift on the astonishing moving mountain beneath him.

McNamara's feat beat the previous world record of 77ft, though the new ride has yet to be certified by investigators from Guinness.

The conditions that led to the vast wave rely on a famous underwater canyon in the area, but as one of McNamara's fellow surfers on the day described, everything else fell into place to create the monstrous wall of water.

"Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves," said Al Mennie. "Cotty (the third member of the party, Andrew Cotton) and I surfed two big waves of about 60 feet and then, when Garrett was ready, came a canyon wave of over 90 feet.

"The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I've ever seen. It was amazing. Most people would be scared, but Garrett was controlling everything in the critical part of the wave.

"It was an inspiring ride by an inspiring surfer."
