Hüseyin Sermet (born in Istanbul, 1955) is a Turkish pianist and composer. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa by the Boğaziçi (1988) and Marmara (1998) universities, and was named a State Artist in 1991.

Hüseyin Sermet was born in Istanbul in 1955. He began his education at the Ankara State Conservatoire and the Highly Gifted Children Act allowed him to continue his studies at the Paris Conservatoire in 1968. He graduated receiving awards for first place in his classes in piano, chamber music, counterpoint and advanced musical analysis. Sermet had the opportunity to study composition with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire. After graduating from Thierry de Brunhoff’s class at the École Normale Alfred Cortot in Paris he continued his studies in musical analysis and piano with Nadia Boulanger and studied under Maria Curcio.

Sermet received awards at the Maurice Ravel, Santander Paloma O’Shea, Jaen, José Iturbi, Palma de Mallorca Chopin, Lili Boulanger, Ettore Pozzoli, Francesco Paola Neglia, Queen Elizabeth and Geza Anda piano competitions, and was also awarded at the Munich and Paris Chamber Music competitions and at the Lili Boulanger composition competition with his string quartet.

Hüseyin Sermet has played with distinguished artists including Mstislav Rostropovich, Yuri Bashmet, Maria Jõao Pires, Ruggero Raimondi and Michel Portal; and has performed in concert with important conductors such as Alain Lombard, Antal Doráti, Lorin Maazel, Semyon Bychkov, Lawrence Foster, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Yoël Levi, Ferdinand Leitner, Emmanuel Krivine and Naoto Otomo and with important ensembles including the Paris Orchestra, the Lyon Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de l’Île de France, the Monte Carlo Opera Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Liège Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergamo-Brescia Chamber Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Katowice and Krakow Chamber Orchestras, the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Sermet has toured across the USA, Brazil, South Korea, Japan and Mexico, and has performed in concert in cities at distinguished concert halls including La Scala, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Salle Pleyel, Palau de la Música (Barcelona) and Teatro Comunale (Florence). Sermet is regularly invited to the Menton, Montreux, La Roque d’Anthéron, Santander, Cervantino, Yokohama, Osaka, Athens, Istanbul and Días de Música (Lisbon) festivals.

Sermet is also renowned as a composer as much as a performer, and his work “Réminiscence” was played at the Empéri Festival in 1997 and broadcast live by France Musique. The first performance of his work for orchestra, “Dream and Nightmare,” commissioned by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra took place in 2004, and of “Sculptures,” commissioned by İş Bank, in 2006.

Hüseyin Sermet’s CD recording of Liszt’s late work and his Piano Sonata in B minor was included among the four best ever recordings of the Liszt sonata by a group of renowned critics brought together by Classica music magazine, and virtually all his CDs have been awarded with the most prestigious prizes of the music world including Diapason d’Or, Choc de la Musique, Midem Classical Award. Sermet has begun to produce CD recordings of Schubert’s piano works for four hands in collaboration with famous Portuguese pianist Maria Jõao Pires for the Erato music company, and has received numerous awards starting with the release of the first CD. These awards include, twice, the Diapason d’Or de l’Année.

Sermet has unearthed rarely-heard pieces of French music and realised the first CD recording of Florent Schmitt’s Symphonie Concertante with the Monte Carlo Orchestra conducted by David Robertson.

Hüseyin Sermet was awarded an honorary doctorate by Boğaziçi University in 1988 and Marmara University in 1998, and awarded the title of State Artist in 1991.
