New Zealand police have defended their investigation into the disappearance of Anan Liu, whose body was found in the boot of her husband's car two days after officers began searching for her.

A post mortem examination today revealed that Ms Liu had died "during a violent episode, though the pathologist can't be precise about when she died".

Her body was found yesterday morning in the boot a car owned by her fugitive husband, Nai Yin Xue.

It had been parked in front of the family home since Mr Xue fled New Zealand last Thursday with the couple's three-year-old daughter, Qian Xun Xue.

Xue is the prime suspect in the investigation and police have now issued a warrant for his arrest.

Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope fronted the media this afternoon to defend the investigation team, which has come under fire over delays in locating the 27-year-old woman.

"There are strict legal requirements around entry to vehicles. Pre-emptive or unauthorised entry would mean evidence could be regarded as tainted and potentially lost. This is the last thing that any investigation wants," Deputy Commissioner Pope said.

"As is always the case, judgement calls have been made by the investigation team.

"[The process] will meet the stringent legal requirements that are required of us by this country, but there are lessons to be learned and they will be taken on board," he said.

Police would have moved more swiftly to open the boot if they believed there was a chance Anan Liu had been alive inside, he said.

"If there had been any suggestion that a person was alive in the vehicle then entry would have been made.

"Police have a responsibility to life above all else."

He said it was unreasonable to have expected Xue would be stopped at the airport on his way out of New Zealand, as there had not been any official orders in place that would raise the alarm.

"There is no information to suggest that any such order exists. Neither a parenting or protection order requires alerts."

Police have also rejected claims they did not notify authorities in the United States, allowing Xue to slip through at Los Angeles International Airport.

"Interpol Washington is currently investigating the whereabouts of Mr Xue. A notice has been in place [with Interpol] since midday Tuesday ... New Zealand police cannot directly request the assistance of any particular agency in another country," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Pope said the events of the past week had shocked the entire community.

"This is a sad and tragic event that has affected not only the family of Qian Xun, but also the Chinese community and the New Zealand community.

"Our hearts go out to the extended family of Anan Liu and Qian Xun."

He praised the police response, calling it highly professional.

"This is a rapidly evolving investigation that has transitioned from a missing persons inquiry into a murder investigation.

"I am very comfortable this team is operating at a high standard.

"I think they would be struggling to put the word Keystone, unprofessional or slipshod to the investigation."

He would not comment on the cause or timing of Ms Liu's death, and reiterated that police were not searching for any weapons.
