中文里公主和王妃是两个词，一个娘家，一个婆家，很好分。欧洲只有princess一个词（or its German, French, Spanish, etc equivalent)，那是因为以前但凡嫁到王家的，自己出身也是王室，born a princess, died a princess，没啥好争议的，不像今天吸毒的，单身妈妈，有婚史的三教九流都可以成为princess
欧洲各国的外交礼节繁琐不堪，排序（precedence)是个很重要的事情，搞不好就会引起战争。所以发展了一套规矩的titles，一听了然，不会搞错。英国比之欧陆，其实一直是比较liberal的，和今天给人的保守印象完全不同，英国的法律规定，一个女子，无论出身如何，嫁了丈夫，titles就跟着丈夫走。而英国的precedence是以和王位远近排的，所以卡米拉，凯特都排在安妮公主前面。据说女王改了章程，在私人场合，Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra of Kent走在她们commoner亲戚前面，算是女王对传统的一种怀念吧
以 Catherine为例，她可以有如下称呼：
the Princess Catherine (if she were a daughter of the monarch, 这里的monarch指君主，国王或女王，下同）
Princess Catherine (if she were the granddaughter of the monarch)
the Princess William (if her husband were the son of the monarch, 相当于Mrs. William)
Princess William （if her husband is the grandson of the monarch)
实际情况是第四种，所以她婚后，自然变成Princess William of Wales。
当初Diana technically从来不是Princess Diana, 她离婚前是The Princess of Wales (Mrs. Wales)，离婚后是Diana, the Princess of Wales(Diana Wales, 就像老美好多女人离婚后继续沿用夫姓）今天的the Princess of Wales是卡米拉，虽然她自己不用这个头衔，但法律上她是
再说the Ducal title。 封爵是个重大的事件，在过去意味着有了自己的领地和子民以及household，更重要的是随之而来的收入，再花钱不用看别人的脸色，这个Duke of Cambridge的头衔比一个仅仅的Prince值钱多了。以前monarchs的孙子重孙都是prince，但只有各房长子才能有个Duke, Earl啥的。所以HRH the Duchess of Cambridge远比Princess William 要prestigious. 不信问问女王的cousin的lp Princess Michael of Kent。顺便说，上一个Duchess of Cambridge是维多利亚女王的婶子，她的孙女是当今女王的祖母Queen Mary，这个也算肥水不落外人田
婚礼的花童lady Louise Windsor，是女王小儿子的女儿，legally她是Princess Louise of Wessex。她成下来眼睛斜视，她父母不希望她在众目下长大，所以以侯爵女儿的规矩称呼她。如果女王丈夫去世，爱德华王子会继承The duke of Edinburgh的头衔，她就是princess Louise of Edinburgh啦
