春秋末年，吴国和越国因战争结下仇怨。吴王夫差为父报仇，在伍子胥的辅佐下日夜勤兵。

　　得意之时的勾践铸成“王者之剑”，欲灭吴国而后快。不想，夫差已攻进“剑庐”，伍子胥领兵已渡过大江。勾践大败。

　　大兵压境，越国危在旦夕，范蠡提出降吴的主张。为保留一线复国的机会，勾践接受了范蠡的意见，降吴为奴。

　　勾践从此为吴王养马、拉车，为了复国的大志受尽屈辱。苟且偷生中，默默等待着。

　　伍子胥认为不杀勾践必留后患，夫差却不以为然，一个亡国的奴隶，是翻不起什么大浪来的。

　　太宰伯噽向夫差荐上越女西施。在伯噽府，夫差见到了美丽绝伦的西施，为她的美貌所倾倒。

　　伍子胥劝说吴王，切不可相信勾践。但勾践的谨慎行事，使得吴王渐渐地放松了警惕，伍子胥的所有谏言也被他当作耳旁之风。勾践和范蠡在暗中逐渐得到了转机，并被夫差准予回越国。回国后勾践仍然谨慎从事，一点一滴地积蓄力量，休养生息。

　　伍子胥一再阻拦意欲北进做霸主的吴王，最终却被夫差赐死。吴国实力顿时削弱。勾践终于得到了机会，举兵复国。

　　姑苏破城之日，勾践率大军在伍子胥自刎之地向其致敬。败于勾践之手的夫差也拔剑自刎。

　　越王勾践，终于历经十数年的卧薪尝胆、韬光养晦、励精图治，实现了复国的宏愿。
