是日也, 天朗气清,惠风和畅。明媚的春光多情地恰到好处地把温暖撒向了美国的肯塔基州。闲暇之际,携友人同游林肯出生地。那是位于肯塔基州哈定县以南的一片茂密的丛林。苍翠葱茏之中,露出一大块空地,大大小小的树木点缀其中。多么幽静,多么神秘。这是我们中国人所认为的龙兴之地。经过陈列室,拾级而上,是林肯的Memorial Building。那还不算雄伟的建筑内保存着一间十平米左右的小木屋。木头看起来近乎腐朽。Memorial Building下方有一口水井,名Sinking Spring.这就是我景仰已久的亚伯拉罕·林肯,美国第 16 任总统的出生之地。我怀着崇敬的心情,缅怀了这位伟人的丰功伟绩,遥想这位平民总统作为“美国梦”的典型所创造的奇迹,眼前出现了黑奴们在南北战争的隆隆的枪炮声中获得解放时欢欣雀跃的情景,耳畔似乎传来了林肯总统那不到三分钟的简短的葛底斯堡演说Gettysburg Address。 山不在高,有仙则灵。寄情山水,而又不在山水之间,不亦乐乎?

Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a large sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggle here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here, to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, —that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, —that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, —that this nation, under God, shall have new birth of freedom, —and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
