It is no accident that Dilthey has passed on to us this note of
Schleiermacher's: 'The blossom is the real maturity. The fruit is
only the chaotic covering for what no longer belongs to the organic
plant.' Dilthey obviously shares this view of an aesthetic
metaphysics. It is at the basis of his relation to history.
