根据罗马天主教的习惯,教徒死后可以被追封为圣徒,为此要举行专门的圣典,由罗马教会指定一人对候选人(即死去的教徒)的各方面品行进行质疑,检举揭发其恶行以反对封其为“圣徒”,从事这项工作的人便被称为devil's advocate(魔鬼的辩护者)。而与之辩论的人则被称为God's advocate(上帝的辩护者)。
现在,devil's advocate 一语已被用来比喻那种故意唱反调、 抬杠、唱对台戏、与人作对 ,多与play 连用----to take a position against something that many others support, either for the sake of argument or to examine its validity。
He seemed very sure of his arguments but I played the devil's advocate just to confuse him.
